January 2024 BPA Newsletter MEMBERSHIP DRIVE FOR 2024 IS NOW OPEN: The BPA annual membership drive has begun. From now until January 31, 2024, get the lowest membership rates of the year. Complete the membership application found at http://boardgamers.org/forms/MemberForm.shtml to take advantage of these rates. To be eligible to vote for the 25 Trial Events to be held at WBC 2024 as well as the Sportsman of the year, you must join by January 31, 2024. Online membership will remain open until June 15, 2024. Price Increases will occur on February 1, April 1, and June 15, 2024. To receive a price before it increases, you must submit the online membership application which is available on the BPA website and send payment by the date listed (Paypal payment sent or check postmarked by the 3 dates listed). TRIAL EVENT & SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD VOTING ENDS JANUARY 31: The voting for the 2023 Sportsman of the Year and the 2024 Trial Events ends with the membership price increase on February 1. This is the last chance to influence events to be held at WBC 2024. To submit a form to GM an event, you must become a BPA member for 2024 and complete and email the Event Form along with your Event Description (Word format preferred) for the Preview Page to the Convention Director at <mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org by the January 31, 2024 submission deadline. Sponsor, Vendor, and Exhibitor Submissions will have a deadline of February 28, 2024. Reminder: Any Game submitted (expansion’s use included) on an event form must be published and available to the public by February 28, 2024. A list of the 27 events that have been submitted with the GM’s names can be found on the orphans’ page at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc_preparation_pelorphans.html. There are less than 4 weeks left to submit GM forms for WBC 2024 Century/Legacy events. BPA SEEKING PROJECT MANAGER FOR WEBSITE RFP: The Board of Directors has approved a temporary paid position. This position is for a Project Manager to lead our finalization of an RFP for upgrading the BPA website (boardgamers.org). The job is expected to be a part time position lasting from January to March 2024. Prefer person with knowledge of BPA/WBC. Project Manager skills required. PBeM NEWS: Completed Tournaments: BROWN OUTLASTS EVERYONE IN CAN’T STOP: After 10 rounds of two-player Can’t Stop, Jim Brown was the last player standing. He outlasted a field of 84 to claim the 2023 Can’t Stop PBEM championship. The remaining laurelists in order were Haim Hochboim, Chris Wildes, Rob Kircher, Eric Freeman, Victoria Wallace. WILDES WINS IN THIRD CAN’T STOP PBEMTOURNAMENT: Thirty-six players participated in the 2023 Las Vegas PBEM tournament, with Chris Wildes prevailing in the final game. SCHOLL WINS THROUGH THE AGES TOURNAMENT: Ben Scholl outlasted 31 players to capture the Through the Ages PBeM crown. NORDSTROM TAKES 2023 TWILIGHT STRUGGLE CHAMPIONSHIP: Justin Nordstrom survives triple elimination tournament to capture the 2023 Twilight Struggle top spot. TWILIGHT STRUGGLE 2024 TO START IN JANUARY: Ron Jacobsen will once again GM next year’s Twilight Struggle PBeM tournament. The tournament games will once again be played on Playdek. More details on the tournament can be found at https://twstourney.wordpress.com/2024-bpa-twilight-struggle-tournament/. Ongoing Tournaments: MARCH MADNESS DRAFT COMPLETE: The draft is complete. Three of our eight first round games are complete. The other five games have a deadline of January 16th. Five teams are in the Final 32: Paul Risner’s 9A Houston 1967, Bryan Collars’ 19A NC State 1974, Bob Hamel’s 8B Houston 2022, Ken Gutermuth’s 29B Louisville 1972 and your GM’s 15B West Virginia 2010. WASHINGTON’S WAR ROUND 1 UNDERWAY: Round 1 of the tournament is under way, with 35 players playing 18 games. Richard Wright is serving as an eliminator to make the # of games even. Round 1 should end January 16th, 2024. Currently 15 games are complete with 7 American and 8 British victories. BPA PBeM Remember: ... all of the above PBeM fun is free to current BPA members. Others may qualify with a $10 Email membership in the year the event starts. BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you do. Get involved.
