PBeM NEWS: Completed Tournaments: ED MENZEL WINS AFRIKA KORPS TOURNAMENT: Two veteran AK gamers faced off in the championship game - Greg Smith and Ed Menzel. Greg took the Axis with a bid of one supply. The timing of the Axis advance on Tobruch was disrupted when the Allies were able to slip an infantry unit into the western desert past the Axis line on their 1 May 1941 turn. Four Axis units isolated the lone Allied unit which was eliminated by isolation. But the delay allowed the Allied June 1941 armor units to deploy on the Tobruch perimeter. The Axis suffered losses from their own soak offs and Allied counterattacks. With the Allies threatening to envelope their forces besieging Tobruch, the Axis Tobruch attack force was eliminated in their 1-1 attack and Rommel surrendered. The order of finish for the top 6 positions were: Ed Menzel, Greg Smith, Kevin Brown, Jeff Linroth, Robert Frisby, and Dan Leader. Eighteen players participated with a total of seventeen games played. View the event report at <http://www.boardgamers.org/pbem/pbem-afk.html> http://www.boardgamers.org/pbem/pbem-afk.html. GETTYSBURG'88 REACHES FINAL ROUND: The Gettysburg '88 PBEM Championship has reached its final round. In this double-elimination event, Greg Smith made it through the 5 rounds of the single-elimination bracket without a loss, while Joe Harkins won out in the single elimination bracket. With his one previous loss, Joe must now defeat Greg twice to take the crown, while Greg need only beat Joe one time. Players have been using the relatively new "July 1-July 2" scenario, which has greatly improved the balance between the Confederate and Union sides. SEMIFINALS BEGIN IN VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC PBEM: Everyone plays! No easy games now. In fact, when the gunpowder dust and oil smoke settles, the lower seeds won every game. There were no upsets. The biggest surprise was the size of Dennis' bid for the Allies at 2.5. Even in a Menzel game, that's a lot. The USN ended up prevailing by 4 to win by 1.5 in the end, so I guess the Allied commander knew what he was doing! The winners moving on to the semi-finals include Ed Menzel, Greg Smith, Dennis Nicholson, and John Sharp -- a very tough field. Good luck to them all!
