JULY DEADLINES: It's that time of year again! Are you ready to rumble? NOW is the time to finalize your plans To attend the World Boardgaming Championships. You have less than three weeks to register your Team in the free Team Tournament or save $10 each by pre-registering for WBC itself or any of its pre-Cons. Misplace your pre-reg form? Solve both problems by downloading the form in pdf format at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/prpg1.pdf. You have even less time to pre-order your WBC souvenir T's and Jackets. Those not ordered by July 10th will not be ready for pickup at WBC. Check out the cool T-shirt options with multiple backgrounds, event art, and the caption of your choice plus last year's winners list on the back at http://store.yahoo.com/lostbattalion/boplas.html SURVEY: Yes, its survey time again. Because we have only a 30 day window after WBC to pick up the option on the remainder of our six-year contract at Lancaster Host or opt out and go elsehwere we want to know what you think of our new site. We don't want you to tell us until you've actually experienced the Host of course but you might save time and help while away the drive if you complete the rest of the survey on the way to/from the Host. You can download a pdf version at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/survey05.pdf or wait to pick one up at registration. LANCASTER HOST SELLOUT: Due to the overwhelming response for the 2005 World Boardgaming Championships, the Lancaster Host Resort is currently sold-out. Reservations are being referred to the full-service America's Best Inn,located just next door from the Lancaster Host. Please call 717-393-5499 and ask for reservations and be sure to ask for the World Boardgamers group rate of $89 per room, nightly, subject to tax. There are many other nearby hotels with a wide range of rates - many within walking distance. Check out the choices at http://www.padutchlodging.com/ AUCTION 05: Pre-registration of lots for the sequel to last year's very successful auction debut at WBC is nearly sold out. Although we will still take a limited number of true collector's items on site, we discourage bringing items on speculation. Only the failure of already pre-registered items to arrive on time will prevent us from turning away most items that have not been pre-registered. See the details at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/auction.htm ELECTION '05: Less than two weeks remains to vote! This year's election of three members to serve a three-year term on the Board of Directors is entering the final stage. The official postal ballot is printed on page 93 of the 2005 Program. Those wishing to vote by email may do so now by consulting the e-ballot at http://www.boardgamers.org/election.htm and e-mailing your votes to doncon99 [at] toad.net prior to July 15th, 2005. The GLORIA MUNDI event at WBC has been cancelled due to production problems, but it has been replaced by JAMBO - an excellent two-player card game that has been nominated for Game of the Year in Europe. Three-time champ Gary Dickson finished 2nd while Mike Pacheco broke into the top four for the first time to claim 3rd. GM Pat Flory took 4th, followed by Jim Eliason and Rob McCracken who claimed 5th and 6th place laurels. MARCH MADNESS: Jim Gutt emerged victorious over a 29-player field in the 2nd annual BPA March Madness PBeM Championship. Jim's 1992 Cincinnati squad used defense and strong bench play to defeat Marvin Birnbaum's 2000 Florida squad. It looked like an early runaway, as Jim's Bearcats jumped out to a 41-24 halftime lead. Marvin closed the gap when the Offensive Specialist improved his "F" rated guard to the "AA" bench rating and scored 19 points. The game was tied at 60 with just two positions remaining to be resolved and all timeouts and coaching moves exhausted. But Jim received a two point cushion when Florida coach Billy Donovan received a technical foul, and low scoring rolls allowed him to hold on for a 66-63 victory. Cincinnati's Herb Jones was named the tournament MVP, with over 23 points per game for the Bearcats, including 30 in a quarter-final win over Paul Risner's 1972 Tar Heels. Also named to the all-tournament team was center Marvin Barnes of 1973 Providence, forward Mike Miller of runner-up 2000 Florida, guard Kendall Gill of 1989 Illinois, guard Tyus Edney of 1995 UCLA with special mention to the 1992 Cincinnati bench, who scored 26 points per game with their "B" rating and held the "AA" rated 2000 Florida bench to just 10 in the championship game. Of the 57 games played, the average margin of victory was 11 points, with eight decided by 3 or less. Also claiming laurels were Paul Risner, Terry Coleman, Sean McCulloch and Ric Manns who finished 3rd thru 6th respectively. PANZERGRUPPE GUDERIAN: Now scheduled for a July 15th start is our first email tournament for this SPI classic. Check it out at http://armchair-warrior.tripod.com/ BARBAROSSA TO BERLIN: The newest PBeM tournament on our calendar is scheduled for an August 15th start.
