April 2020 Newsletter COVID-19 UPDATE: As most of us are under a stay at home order, we hope that you and your families are remaining safe. The BPA, along with Seven Springs, continue to monitor the potential impact of COVID-19 on the 2020 WBC. We are concerned for the health and safety of our members and recognize that the situation continues to evolve. The decision on the status of WBC has not been made yet. We will continue to work with Seven Springs to determine what is best for our members with a decision to be made as we get closer to WBC 2020. JUNIOR EVENT GM's NEEDED: Our new Junior's Coordinator, Megan Byrd, is looking for volunteers to GM our 24 Junior event slots. If you are interested in running a Junior's event, please contact Megan at juniors [at] boardgamers.org <mailto:juniors [at] boardgamers.org> . For more details on the tournament, visit http://www.boardgamers.org/pbem/pbem-dip.html. REINGING CAESAR JIANG WINS TWILIGHT STRUGGLE: After a grueling 20 round, swiss-paired, double elimination tournament, the Cold Warriors were down to one Mater of DEFCON, Allan Jiang. Allan lost in the second round and never looked back with 8 straight wins. The Remaining Laurelists were, in order, Aran Warsawski, Tony Russo, Michael Stryker, Roy Russo, and Antero Kussi. For more details, visit http://www.boardgamers.org/pbem/pbem-tws.html. Tournaments Starting: NAVEGADOR TOURNAMENT NOW ACCEPTING SIGN-UPS: Rob Flowers will be GMing a Navegador PBeM tournament starting in July. Navegador has been a tournament at WBC since 2011, and has been a solid game with its rondel mechanics and market manipulation, while players explore routes to the Far East. The tournament will be played on the Yucata online game portal and all entrants will play 4 simultaneous games for a chance to advance to further rounds. Visit https://epworthian.wordpress.com/navegador/tournament-format/ to view the tournament format, and email Rob Flowers at epworthian1 [at] gmail.com <mailto:epworthian1 [at] gmail.com> by July 5 to sign up. THROUGH THE AGES TOURNAMENT OPEN FOR REGISTRATION: gm Randy Buehler is kicking off another Through the Ages PBeM Tournament. For details on the tournament format and to sign up for the tournament, please visit https://www.meepleleague.com/bpa-through-the-ages-pbem-tournament-2020/. TWILIGHT STRUGGLE 2020 PBEM TOURNAMENT TO BEGIN IN JUNE: GM Ron Jacobsen will be starting up the next Twilight Struggle PBeM Tournament in June. As with the 2019 tournament, PlayDek will be the default application for game play and the maximum round length will be approximately 6 weeks. Pairing will be in a Swiss format with eliminations rather than a play-off. The plan is for triple-elimination this time, to guarantee players more games. So the winner will be the only player NOT to lose 3 times, and other positions will be based on order of elimination, with brief play-offs of ties. Entries must be received by June 3, 2020 and can be made by emailing twilightstrugglegm [at] gmail.com <mailto:twilightstrugglegm [at] gmail.com> . All entrants must be members of BPA, at the Associate level or above, for the year 2020, prior to the tournament start. For more information, go to the tournament website at https://twstourney.wordpress.com/. The tournament is expected to run until Late 2021 or early 2022. Ongoing Tournaments: MARCH MADNESS 2019 HAS FIRST FINAL FOUR PARTICIPANT: The March Madness tournament is down to 11 teams. Allan Jiang's Arizona 2003 squad has moved on to claim the first position in our Final 4, and his team is relaxing in quarantine waiting to see who his opponent will be. The lowest seed remaining is John Coussis's Michigan State 2000, a 37B, who has won 2 games, but is now up against Steve Caler's #1 seed. EMPIRE OF THE SUN CONCLUDED ROUND 4: There is one match still playing as Round 4 winds down, with about a month to go. The results are in, however, on the rest and the Allies have dominated this round logging 6 victories versus 2 for the JP so far. Four of those wins went the distance and ended by Japanese invasion. Some seriously good playing in this round. Stay Tuned for Round 5! FOR THE PEOPLE ENTERING THIRD ROUND: The first two simultaneous rounds of the For the People Tournament have ended, Round three is no underway. HANNIBAL TOURNAMENT DOWN TO 17 PLAYERS: The Hannibal PBeM tournament continues its double elimination tournament with 17 players still remaining. For more details visit the tournament website at https://hrctourney.wordpress.com/hrc2019/ TWILIGHT STRUGGLE GETTING READY FOR ROUND 9: The final game of round 9 is concluding and round 10 is about to begin. It looks like the tournament will conclude with Round 11. The GM is planning on starting another Twilight Struggle PBeM tournament at the conclusion of this tournament. Watch for more details in future newsletters. WILDERNESS WAR GETTING READY FOR SECOND ROUND: Wilderness War Round 1 has come to an end and the second round will be beginning next week, BPA PBeM Remember: ... all of the above PBeM fun is free to current BPA members. Others may qualify with a $10 Email membership in the year the event starts. All multi-day paid attendees to WBC are current BPA members for the balance of that calendar year. BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments.
