January 2019 Newsletter JIANG CAPTURES CAESAR AND CONSUL AWARDS: After finishing 11th in the Caesar running in his first year at WBC in 2017, Allan Jiang reached the summit in his 2018 sophomore year, capturing both the Caesar and Consul Awards. Allan received laurels in 8 events at WBC and 3 PBeM events. The remaining top 6 finishers behind Allan were Haakon Monsen, Nick Henning, James Pei, Trella Bromley, and Chris Trimmer. MEMBERSHIP RATES INCREASE FEBRUARY 1: The BPA annual membership drive continues but prices will increase on February 1, 2019. If you still want to get the lowest rates, you must complete and submit the online application at http://www.boardgamers.org/forms/MemberForm.shtml and submit payment via Paypal or check. To receive the price before it increases, the form and the payment must be submitted before February 1 (Paypal payment sent or check postmarked before February 1, 2019). There are 50 people who have not completed either a form or sent in payment as of January 25. A list of the current members can be found at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc19/prereg.html in order to check your membership. Online membership will remain open until June 15, 2019. Price increases will occur on February 1st, and April 1st, and June 15th, 2019. To receive a price before it increases, you must submit the online membership application which is available on the BPA website and send payment by the date listed (Paypal payment sent or check postmarked by the 3 dates listed). A reminder that the membership process is not complete until both the membership application and the funds are received. TRIAL EVENT & SPORTSMANSHIP AWARD VOTING ENDS JANUARY 31: The voting for the 2018 Sportsman of the Year and the 2019 Trial Events ends with the membership price increase on February 1. This is the last chance to influence events to be held at WBC 2019. CALL FOR GM's FOR 2019: Now is the time to submit an event form <http://www.boardgamers.org/forms/SubmitEvent.php> for the WBC 2019 events. Please complete the form carefully and completely since it will be used to determine event location for WBC 2019. Reminder that you must be a BPA member for 2019 to GM an event. SEVEN SPRINGS RESERVATIONS: Hotel Reservations opened on January 14 for stays of 5 nights or more. BOARD OF DIRECTORS NOMINATIONS: All BPA members are hereby notified of their right to nominate members for the three Board seats whose terms expire at the next WBC. To appear on the ballot, a member must be nominated in writing by at least three members; one of which must be the nominee. Nominations must be signed and received at BPA, 7766 Valley View Court, Hickory, NC 28602 no later than February 28, 2019 to be eligible for election in that year. NOTE: Email nominations are NOT acceptable, nor can a member nominate more than one member for the Board. When contemplating nominations, members should consider that the BPA conducts most of its business by email and needs Board members who are able and willing to offer their time and skills to the organization in a timely manner. Besides forwarding a signed nomination, each nominee must submit a statement not to exceed 100 words summarizing what they can contribute in service to the Board of Directors of the BPA by February 28, 2019. The nomination form is on line at http://www.boardgamers.org/bpanom.htm PBeM NEWS: MONSEN WINS 2018 ADEL VERPLICHTET: The final was a close, hotly contested match settled by a tie on the final space -- with another player, with the largest set, just one space behind the two front-runners. Congratulations to Haakon Monsen for prevailing! The remaining laurelists, in order were Allan Jiang, John Pack, Tom DeMarco, Lexi Shea, and Chris Trimmer. VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC: The semi-finals are split, between sides and between high and low seeds. Tim Tow's IJN defeats Alan Applebaum's USN when an all-out Pearl Harbor defense on Turn Two goes south. After first round attrition, the lone Hosho guards the invasion and sinks two BB setting up massive USN surface losses in three night rounds to end the match. In the other game, Dennis Nicholson's USN, for which he bid 2.5 using the Menzel options, prevails over Wayne Bonnett's Cinderella IJN by a half-POC after all eight turns. Allan Jiang will be the GM for the tournament. BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you do. Get involved.
