September BPA Newsletter Slightly delayed by your new convention director. Expect the October newsletter later his month. ANOTHER STRONG WBC: Attendance was slightly up from 2016 but attendees continued the trend of arriving earlier and staying longer in the nine-day conference. 26 events drew triple-digit participation - up one from 2016 - as the average tournament field rose by 3.9 players from 58.9 to 62.8, with 89 returning events increasing in attendance and 27 setting an all-time high. 150 of the scheduled 155 events achieved tournament status with fields ranging from a minimum of eight to 275 players for ticket to Ride and Can't Stop. This year's champions along with a complete listing of the top six places, updated laurel totals, photos and anecdotes for every event as only WBC does them will appear on our website in November. FOUR RANDOM DUDES END THE REIGN OF THE HARRY B's: In a very close race, the team of Four Random Dudes edged out the Department of Agriculture and the Harry B's by one point as the bonus point for winning a new event gave Four Random Dudes 19 points for a one point win. Congratulations to Jon Senn, Haakon Monsen, Ben Scholl and Curt Collins on their win. More details including a list of the Top 25 teams appears at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc17/teamresults.html RANDY BUELLER BUSTS THE BRACKET IN 2017: Five of the top 21 teams managed to make the top ten but the rest of the top ten were teams ranked from 53 to 70 which would normally cause havoc in the bracket busting contest. This year's contest however was extremely close as eight individuals (Trish Wolff, Sean McCulloch, Sam Wolff, Nick Page, Eric Freeman, Andrew Freeman, and Bruce Reiff) picked 5 of the 10 teams. In the end, however, only one individual managed to pick 6 of our top ten teams. Top honor as the best of the bracket busters goes to Randy Buehler who earned his 2018 Sustaining membership with six correct picks. 2018 WBC RESERVATION POLICY: The WBC is set for July 21st to July 29th, 2018 at The Seven Springs Mountain Resort. Hotel Reservations at Seven Springs will once again be staggered and not available until January due to the WBC cancellation policy. Any WBC attendee arriving on Friday, July 20, 2018 and staying for at least seven (7) consecutive paid nights will receive a $50.00 credit per room. This credit will be applied to the attendee's room account after the seventh (7th) night of their stay. Condo and townhouse reservations are available now in varying sizes (two-, three- and four-bedroom units) for the July 2018 World Boardgaming Championships. The group rate for condos and townhouses for the July 2018 event will be $139 plus tax per bedroom per night. WBC EVENT REPORTS IN PROGRESS: Event Reports are still being collected and used to update 155 Event pages for a scheduled November unveiling. 3 GMs who have yet to fulfill that part of their obligation have been notified that the clock is ticking and prize level and/or eligibility penalties will apply for those events who's GMs do not comply. WBC is unique among all gaming conventions for providing not only this coverage but also archiving such reports for posterity. Check out the Event history section at http://boardgamers.org/history_wbceventreports.html to check the progress of your favorite event over the past 17 years. WBC 2017 EVENT SUBMISSIONS: Every WBC is followed by requests to add another game to our schedule. If only it were that simple. No event takes place without a dedicated volunteer GM to run it. No one gets paid to run events at WBC. So if you want Game X at WBC, you will need to step forward and offer to run it! If you are an individual who wants to contribute to the unique nature of WBC, start by reading our GM Guidelines at http://boardgamers.org/gmguide.htm. Then, when our monthly newsletter calls for event submissions, submit the event form cited in that newsletter to get the process started. Without volunteer GM's, WBC would not exist, so thank you to the folks who have volunteered in the past and hopefully some of you will join their ranks in 2018.
