August 2020 Newsletter BOARD OF DIRECTORS VOTING RESULTS: We would like to thank all 5 candidates for their interest in BPA Board of Directors. Incumbents Ken Gutermuth and Stuart Tucker are joined by Bryan Collars as your newly elected Board of Directors for the 2021 to 2023 term. For more information on the election results, please visit http://www.boardgamers.org/about_electionresults.html . WBC 2021 EVENTS: With the cancellation of WBC 2020, the board has been discussing how to handle events for WBC 2021. The results of that discussion are: The Century Group events for WBC 2021 will be the same 99 Century events and 12 legacy events that were to be included at WBC 2020. The convention director will be reaching out to the GM's that volunteered for 2020 over the next couple of months to make sure they would still like to run the event in 2021. The Trial events selected in the Membership Vote for 2020 will be run as Trial events for WBC 2021. The convention director will be reaching out to the GM's that volunteered for 2020 over the next couple of months to make sure they would still like to run the event in 2021. The Vendors/Sponsors will be given the opportunity to run the events they submitted for WBC 2020 or to change to a different game. The only restriction will be that the game has been published by February 28, 2021. Two New Trial events will be added to WBC 2021 based on a limited Membership voting. Games that can be included on this ballot must be games that have never appeared on a Trial ballot in the past. Event Forms for games to be included will be due between December 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. DO NOT submit forms before then as the current event form will be changing. BPA Members will be able to vote for 2 games on the ballot between January 1, 2021 and January 31, 2021. For a listing of the Century Group and Trial events included, please visit http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc_preparation_pelorphans.html . SEVEN SPRINGS SPECIAL RATE OFFER: Seven Springs will honor the WBC 2020 lodging rates for personal visits this year, including the condo special of pay for five nights and get two free nights (seven consecutive night stay). BPA Members can call the Seven Springs reservations team directly at 866-437-1300 and ask for the WBC rates. Rooms and reservations are subject to availability. PBEM TOURNAMENT REQUIREMENTS & GUIDELINES: With the cancellation of WBC 2020, there have been many inquiries about running online tournaments. Here is a summary of the BPA PBeM requirements and guidelines for those of you who might be interested in GMing a tournament. Game Selection: The BPA sponsors PBeM tournaments for games that are run at WBC and have drawn the minimum participants at WBC. Website Creation: A tournament website is required to run a PBeM tournament. It should minimally include sign-up instructions, start date, estimated length, format, special tournament rules, error handling, and pairings & standings. The Meeple League can provide hosting for these tournaments. You can contact them at <https://www.meepleleague.com/bpa-online-tournaments/> https://www.meepleleague.com/bpa-online-tournaments/ Once the Game Selection and Website have been created, send an email to the Convention Director at conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org <mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> for approval. Once approved, a link to the tournament website will be added to the BPA PBeM page found at http://www.boardgamers.org/pbem.html. Getting the Word Out: The BPA prefers at least two newsletter announcements before the tournament starts. Consimworld and BoardGameGeek are other good ways of advertising for players. At the conclusion of the tournament, the GM will need to provide a report to the Convention Director on the results of the tournament. Updated details of what is to be included in the report as well as additional guidelines developed to assist the GM in preparing and running the tournament can be found at http://www.boardgamers.org/pbem_guidelines.html. Ongoing Tournaments: EMPIRE OF THE SUN DOWN TO 10: All 5 games are running well, with one game already at Turn 7! The bid spread went sharply for the Allies and landed at +.7 for Round 5. Two US1 bids and three US0 bids with no bids for the JP. Good luck to all the top players still competing. Some very interesting games being played right now! GREAT CAMPAIGNS OF THE AMERICAN CIVIL WAR ENTERS THE FINAL ROUND: The field of 37 entrants is now down to just two: Ed Beach and David Dockter are playing in the finals. They are playing the Pipe Creek Plan scenario from the Roads to Gettysburg II: Lee Strikes North. The scenario starts with the Union and Confederate forces just where they stood early on July 1, 1863, before the Battle of Gettysburg, but with quite different victory conditions than the traditional battle and covering six days of action. Fittingly, Ed and David began playing the scenario on July 1 of this year, the 157th anniversary of the start of the historic battle. Tournament congratulations also go to Ken Lee and Rob Mull for reaching the semi-finals. More details on the tournament can be found at http://gcacwpbem.blogspot.com/p/results.html . PATHS OF GLORY 2019 ENTERING ROUND 5: Round 5 about to start. A few miscellaneous factoids on Round 4: a) The CP has a record of 17 wins this round with AP bids of -1 to +2 VP, b) The AP's 11 wins feature a much more constrained bidding range of 0 or 1, and c) 7 of 30 matches went to the last turn, 9 of 30 didn't make it to turn 10. A quick perusal of the logs shows the vast majority of the latter being 'morale check failures', and not AVs. TWLIGHT STRUGGLE ENTERS SECOND ROUND: Round 1 of the BPA Twilight Struggle tournament is complete (5 days ahead of schedule). In 39 games, the Russians had the better of it 24-15, with 87% of the games played at a bid of 2 given to the US. All of the Laurelists from the previous tournament won their first round game, but the random pairing has #1 and #2 facing off in Round 2 of this triple elimination event. Follow the tournament at https://twstourney.wordpress.com/ VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC ENTERS SEMIFINALS: In the lone quarterfinal, Bob Hamel took the IJN after seeing dismal Pearl Harbor raids that let 5-6 battleships escape. Greg Smith started the empire's serious problems on Turn Three by saving Pearl Harbor with a lone remaining LBA while denying Japanese control of the South Pacific and Marianas Islands. On Turn Four, Greg drove the last nails in the coffin. Battleships based in Dutch Harbor supported by aircraft carriers at Guadalcanal flagged the Japanese Islands, sinking the repairing Zuikaku. While Japan earned points in the Hawaiian Islands and Indonesia, they were about the only ones. That allowed the USN to go ahead by half-a-POC (including the bid) and draw a Japanese surrender. Greg moves forward to battle Mike Kaye while Alan Applebaum and Wayne Bonnett face off in the other semi-final. WASHINGTON'S WAR FINALS ARE UNDERWAY: Washington's War has entered the finals with Derek Landel's British taking on James Pei's Americans. WILDERNESS WAR ENTERS ROUND 3: Wilderness War Round 2 has come to an end and the third round began in late July. Please continue to try to average one card play each per day and you should finish with plenty of time to spare. The website is up to date with respect to the Round 2 results at https://wildernesswar2016.weebly.com. BPA PBeM Remember: ... all of the above PBeM fun is free to current BPA members. Others may qualify with a $10 Email membership in the year the event starts. BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you do. Get involved.
