September 2019 BPA Newsletter

Thanks to everyone who attended the 2019 WBC. I hope you will be able to
join us again in 2020 when the WBC will be held once again at Seven Springs
Mountain Resort on July 25th to August, 2nd.

WBC 2019 WRAP-UP: Attendance was up 12% from 2018 with the trend of people
staying longer and less one-day guest passes continuing. Total BPA
memberships was also up 12% with Associate (play by email) memberships up
11% so far in 2019.

As far as the tournament games go, total number of players entering
tournaments was up 5% while the # of games played was down (2%) and player
starts were up 2%. 2019 also saw an increase in number of players receiving
laurels, 4%, while 38% of all attendees earned laurels in 2019. Twenty-nine
events drew triple-digit entrants with five events topping the 200 mark.
Can't Stop lead the way with 282 players, followed by Ticket to Ride (281),
Facts in Five (274), Splendor (266) and Terraforming Mars (256).

An early look at this year's tournament winners can be found at
http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc19/champslist.html . Winners by year for all
162 WBC 2019 events can be viewed at
http://www.boardgamers.org/winners/index.html .

WBC EVENT REPORTS: Thanks to all of the GM's. As of today, all 162 event
reports have been submitted and construction on the event reports pages has
begun. This year's champions along with a complete listing of the top six
places, updated laurel totals, photos and anecdotes for every event as only
WBC does them will appear on our website in the next several weeks. You can
check the status of each event report page at

LAURELS: The Laurel pages will be updated along with the event reports in
the next several weeks. You can check the status of the laurels updates for
each event at http://www.boardgamers.org/eventhistory/index.html.

on your minds, members are reminded to submit their nominations of
individuals for the BPA annual awards of Sportsman of the Year and GM of the
Year to conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org
<mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> . The top Sportsmanship
nominees will be included on the December/January membership application for
the members to vote for who they feel is most deserving of the award. The
top GM of the year nominations will be sent to the Board to determine the
top GM honor for 2019.

MIT SGS REACHES THE TOP: In continuing the recent trend of 3 scorers for
the winning team, Marty Sample rode the backs of his teammates, Dave
Finberg, Aaron Fuegi, and James Terry to the top of the Team Tournament.
James won Superstar Baseball for the first time while Dave and Aaron swept
the Titan tournaments to outdistance the field by 6 points to win the 29th
Team Tournament.

More details including a list of the Top 25 teams appear at
http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc19/teamresults.html .

PEI IS MASTER OF THE BRACKET IN 2019: Is 50% a good percentage, James Pei
and Sean McCulloch think so. James and Sean managed to pick 5 of our top
ten finishers but would force the convention director to dig past the first
tiebreaker to determine the winner as neither picked any of the teams in the
correct place. Therefore, the second tie-breaker was needed (who picked the
lowest ranked team that finished in the top ten) in order to crown this
year's Bracket Bustin' Contest. James, successfully picking 27th ranked
Ghost Division, edged out Sean, who correctly picked 20th ranked School of
Sharks, to become the Master of this year's Bracket Bustin' Contest.
Congratulations to James on earning his 2020 Sustaining membership. See
http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc19/teamresults.html for more details.

WBC AUCTION RESULTS: The 2019 Auction report and listing of the sales price
for the 613 lots are now on our website, led by a $925 bid for War of the
Ring Collector's Edition. More details and a complete list of auction sales
are available at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc19/auctionlotsales.html .
Auction Store sales are NOT listed on line. If you want an accounting of
your items individual sale prices, inquire at
conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org
<mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> .

2018 ELECTION RESULTS: Andrew Drummond and Marcy Morelli joined incumbent
Bruno Sinigaglio on election to the Board of Directors. They defeated three
other candidates, including incumbent Josh Githens. The BPA thanks Josh,
who has served on the Board since 2010 for his years of dedication and
service to the BPA as a valued member of the Board.

Andrew Drummond led the voting with 445 votes followed by Bruno Sinigaglio
with 374 and Marcy Morelli with 345. The remaining candidates vote totals
were Pete Stein 334, Josh Githens 245, and Grant Ladue 234 from a voting
block of 235 members. We thank all the candidates for their participation
and all members who took the time to vote. Without sufficient participation
in the Board of Directors voting by the membership, we would be unable to
continue our Non-Profit Corporation status. Results can be viewed at
