August 2018 BPA Newsletter

Thanks to everyone who attended the 2018 WBC. I hope you will be able to
join us again in 2019 when the WBC will be held once again at Seven Springs
Mountain Resort on July 20th to July 28th.

WBC 2018 WRAP-UP: Attendance was up 1% but total days attended was up 3%.
We continue to see the trend of people staying longer and less one-day guest
passes as one-day attendees dropped 24%.

As far as the tournament games go, total number of players entering
tournaments was up 1% while the # of games played and player starts were up
4% and 3% respectively. 2018 also saw an increase in number of players
receiving laurels, 5% increase in # of players, and 37% of all attendees
earned laurels in 2018. Twenty-eight events drew triple-digit entrants with
Splendor leading the way with 297 players.

An early look at this year's tournament winners can be found at
http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc18/champslist.html .

WBC EVENT REPORTS: GM's are reminded that 2018 Event Reports are due by
August 31 to conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org
<mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> . So far 61 of the 161
tournaments have submitted their reports. This year's champions along with
a complete listing of the top six places, updated laurel totals, photos and
anecdotes for every event as only WBC does them will appear on our website
in the coming months. Remember, just posting them on facebook or
Boardgamegeek does not fulfill the requirement to submit an event report.

LAURELS: While waiting on the rest of the event reports, work on the laurel
pages has begun. An updated date is shown below those that have been
completed so far. Those updated so far are the "A & B" events whose event
reports have been submitted and the 4 that had PBeM tournaments complete
recently. The updated pages can be found at
http://www.boardgamers.org/eventhistory/index.html.

SPORTSMAN AND GM OF THE YEAR NOMINATIONS DUE: While the WBC is still fresh
on your minds, members are reminded to submit their nominations of
individuals for the BPA annual awards of Sportsman of the Year and GM of the
Year to conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org
<mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> . The top Sportsmanship
nominees will be included on the December/January membership application for
the members to vote for who they feel is most deserving of the award. The
top GM of the year nominations will be sent to the Board to determine the
top GM honor for 2018.

NEWLY FORMED WESTERN PA SOCIAL CLUB EARNS TOP TEAM HONORS: Harry B's
defector Bruce Reiff was carried to the team championship by his new
teammates as Jeff Mullet and Trella Bromley lead their team to victory in
the 28th annual team tournament. Congratulations to Trella Bromley, Jeff
Mullet, Tom McCorry, and Bruce Reiff on their wins.

More details including a list of the Top 25 teams appear at
http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc18/teamresults.html .

RYAN FEATHERS BUSTS THE BRACKET IN 2018: Five of the top 6 teams managed to
make the Top Ten in the team tournament but the 52nd ranked team T.O.E.S.,
led by Bracket Bustin' champion Ryan Feathers win in Terra Mystica, proved
to be the difference in this year's competition to predict the top ten team
tournament finishers. In a very tight race, with many of the 42 entrants
riding the top teams, Ryan Feathers, Eric Freeman and Derek Glenn all
successfully picked 7 of the top 10 teams with another 10 entrants correctly
predicting 6 of the teams in the top 10. The difference in the final
ranking was Ryan successfully predicting Western PA Social Club to win
granting him the tiebreaker over Alex and Derek. Ryan, who proved you
should always bet on your own team, took advantage of his win by being the
only entrant to pick T.O.E.S. in the top 10. Congratulations to Ryan on
earning his 2019 Sustaining membership.

WBC AUCTION RESULTS: The 2018 Auction report and listing of the sales price
for the 624 lots are now on our website, led by a $500 bid for John Jacoby's
annual Circus Maximus miniatures set. Many more details and a complete list
of auction sales are available at
http://boardgamers.org/wbc18/auctionlotsales.html. Auction Store sales are
NOT listed on line. If you want an accounting of your items individual sale
prices, inquire at conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org
<mailto:conventiondirector [at] boardgamers.org> .

2018 ELECTION RESULTS: Rebecca Roppolo joined incumbents Don Greenwood and
Andy Lewis on election to the Board for a three year term. The three won
over four other candidates, including incumbent Ken Whitesell. The BPA
thanks Ken, who has served on the Board since 2007 for his years of
dedication and service to the BPA as a valued member of the Board.

Greenwood led the voting with 349 votes followed by Lewis with 270 and
Roppolo with 242. The remaining candidates vote totals were Ken Whitesell
147, Marcy Morelli 130, Grant LaDue 102, and Jonathan Lockwood 82 from a
voting bloc of 180 members. We thank all the candidates for their
participation and all members who took the time to vote. Without sufficient
participation by the membership we are unable to continue our Non-Profit
Corporation status. Results can be viewed at
http://boardgamers.org/about_electionresults.html.

results have been updated in the Event History & Laurels pages.

ILLIOFF WINS DIPLOMACY PBEM: Doug Illioff topped a field of 28 players to
capture the 2018 Diplomacy PBeM crown. The field of 28 each played in three
seven player games. The other laurelists were John Stevens, Ryan Feathers,

GREENWOOD WINS 2018 MARCH MADNESS TITLE: 40 players participated in this
year's fifteenth rendition of the BPA March Madness PBeM tournament. Our
thirteenth different champion was crowned, as Don Greenwood won his first
title in either the PBeM or WBC versions of this event, taking a step up
from his Final Four appearance in last year's PBeM tournament. The
remaining laurelists, in order of finish, were Marvin Birnbaum, Bob Hamel,
Terry Coleman, Max Jamelli, and GM Bruce Monnin.

More details on this year's event can be found at
<http://boardgamers.org/pbem/pbem-mms.html>

BROWNE WINS PRO GOLF TITLE IN PLAYOFF: 45 players signed up to contest the
eighth annual BPA Pro Golf PBeM tournament. All players first competed on
the Augusta National course. The top 30 players who finished even par and
better survived the cut and moved on to contest the Muirfield Village
course. The top 15 (those one under par and better) then advanced to
contest the Pebble Beach course. After the 54 holes of play, Thomas Browne
and Pete Stein were tied and forced to a three hole playoff at the
exceedingly short Arrowhead Park course. Thomas emerged victorious as Pete
missed mid-range putts on all three holes. The remaining laurelists, in
order of finish, were Pete Stein, Jessica Finkeldey, Jeff Mullet, Mathieu
Danel, and Alexandra Monnin.

winning both of his matches. Allan is the first to accomplish that feat
since 2012. With

the other two winners, Haakon Monson and John Pack, also finishing second in
their second semi-final, the other two second-place finishers will both
advance into the final, Lexi Shea and Tom DeMarco. See all completed games
and the final action at <http://www.gameaholics.com/adv_tournament.htm>

POG ENTERS ROUND 6: All nine matches are underway, some moving faster than
others. Bids were fairly distributed between 0 and 2. We're only a month
into the round with some very experienced players so it should be no
surprise that we don't have any early decisions recorded. More details on
the tournament can be found at
http://www.bitterwoods.net/paths-of-glory-bpa-tourney-page/.

THROUGH THE AGES ENTERS FINAL GAME: Through the Ages has entered its final
