May 2018 Newsletter DRUMMOND NAMED GM OF THE YEAR: Andrew Drummond edged out fellow Canadian Duncan McGregor to become the 2017 GM of the Year. Andrew ran Can't Stop and Orleans as well as Splendor and Augustus for the juniors. The remaining top six finishers for 2017, in order, were, Keith Wixson, Marc Houde, Greg Crowe, and Tom Haver. PRELIMINARY SCHEDULE POSTED: The preliminary schedule for WBC 2018 has been posted at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc18/schedule.html . Preview pages are being updated with the schedule and 2018 information and will be available shortly. As you plan your schedule, please remember that the BPA does not provide copies of the games for use at the tournaments. All tournaments require participants, for both adult and junior events, to bring a copy of the game to be guaranteed a spot. AIRPORT SHUTTLE SCHEDULED POSTED: Additional shuttle times back to the Airport have been added for the Monday after WBC. For a full list of shuttle times and how to book them, please visit http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc_gettingthere.html PRE-REGISTRATION FOR WBC ENDS JUNE 15: Pre-registration for WBC 2018 will close on June 15. In order to pre-register by then, both the membership application, found at http://www.boardgamers.org/forms/MemberForm.shtml , and payment must be submitted by that date. For payment to be submitted, checks must be postmarked by June 15 and paypal payments must be received by June 15. AUCTION AND AUCTION STORE NOW OPEN FOR SUBMISSIONS: Submissions are now be accepted for the 2018 WBC Auction and Auction Store. Remember that space is limited so both will fill up quickly, especially the Auction. New for 2018, the minimum number of lots for the auction is now 10. Please vote so we can ensure we meet the minimum participation required. Seven Members appear on the ballot for election to a three year term on the BPA Board of Directors. The slate features three incumbents and four challengers. The list of candidates and their statement can be found at http://www.boardgamers.org/about_election2017.html . Members are encouraged to vote on who you believe would be the best candidates on your BPA Board of Directors. The remaining top six finishers were Antonio Cataldo, Kevin Youells, and Jonas Lindqvist. The tournament featured a field of 24 players. The remaining top six finishers behind Tom and Phil were Ed O'Connor, Gary Dickson, Andy Choptiany, and Bert Schoose. GABERSON WINS WILDERNESS WAR TOURNAMENT: Four time WBC champ, Paul Gaberson, bested a field of 49 players to capture the PBeM crown. Paul defeated Bill Peeck in the finals while going an impressive 7-0. The remaining top 6 finishers behind Paul and Bill were Filip Spacek, James Pei, Tom Wilcockson, and Keith Wixson. MARCH MADNESS PBeM UPDATE: Don Greenwood advances to the Finals. Sean McCulloch and Terry Coleman laying to make Final Four and face Marvin Birnbaum in the other semifinal game. PRO GOLF PBeM UPDATE: Round 1 of the tournament at Augusta is complete. Round 2 is being held at Muirfield village. First round leader Justin Rice was at 6 under par followed by Paul Pawlak and Pete Stein, each at 5 under par. Justin and Paul have dropped back to the pack as the completed Muirfield at 3 over par and 4 over par respectively. VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC UPDATE: The second round sees both of the top seeds eliminated in their first games. The tops seed prefer the IJN 6-2 -- but the final results are dead-even with the USN winning four matches to equal the IJN's record. Four games use the Menzel options -- and see the USN prevail in three. Eight uses of now retired adjustments appear; those go tellingly 3-1 in favor of the Japanese. Wayne Bonnett becomes the tournament dark horse by flipping Singapore on Turn Five to defeat Michael Day (two-time finalist and four-time semi-finalist). John Sharp, whose 12th seed does not do his skill justice, sends Mike Kaye ashore; both have collided in the Top 10 Invitational before! Rules and rule clarifications will be the same as the last two tournaments with one exception.
