SPORTSMANSHIP WINNER: Laurie Voisin of Lockport, NY has been named
Sports(wo)man of the Year for 2016 by amassing nearly 17% of the 440 (a record
number) votes cast in the annual membership vote. Laurie had been acclaimed
the winner of her Five Tribes preliminary game. After the game was put away and
everyone had left for other activities, Laurie returned - pointing out a
scoring error in the scoresheet that put her in third place. She not only
pointed out the mistake but then searched for and found the real winner in Open
Gaming to inform him that he had indeed qualified to advance and she had not.
That act of sportsmanship by someone with all of two laurels to her name won
her WBC’s biggest prize … free lodging at the next WBC. See the details at
http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc16/sportman.html

2017 TRIAL VOTE RESULTS: Aided by a prolonged voting period, the 2017
Membership Drive resulted in the largest membership participation ever, besting
our previous record enrollment by 15%. Those members indicated a strong
preference for new events with six new games winning their WBC debuts in 2017 -
led by Terraforming Mars and Star Wars Rebellion. They were followed by Love
Letter, Terra Mystica, Orleans and Scythe which will also make their WBC event
debut in 2017. The results of the Membership vote can be found at
http://boardgamers.org/wbc17/trialvote.html

2017 ORPHAN'S LIST UPDATED: With eligibility thus decided, the next step is
securing GM commitments with just one month to do so before the schedule closes
for the year. At present, only 57 of 148 eligible events have GM commitments.
See http://boardgamers.org/wbc17/orphans.html
<http://boardgamers.org/wbc17/orphans.html> for a list of eligible events
needing a GM commitment. Those eligible events without a GM commitment by March
15th will be replaced by events from the Alternate List with a GM commitment.
So, now is the time to step forward to submit an event form for an unclaimed
event - or even to submit a new event altogether as a Sponsor or Vendor or as
an eligible alternate by submitting an event form at
http://boardgamers.org/forms/SubmitEvent.php
<http://boardgamers.org/forms/SubmitEvent.php>. Note that GMs must be a current
Sustaining or higher level member.

If you'd like to help out but don't feel confident enough to run an event on
your own or don't want to make too long a commitment, you could still be of
great assistance. Perhaps you are good at teaching games and would be willing
to run a demonstration for a GM who lacks the time or skills to teach. If so,
contact CD [at] Boardgamers.org <mailto:CD [at] Boardgamers.org> with a list of
games you'd be willing to teach and we will pass along the offer to a grateful
GM. Conversely, if you are a GM who uses a laptop at WBC to run their event,
you should contact Andy Latto at andy.latto [at] pobox.com <mailto:andy.latto
[at] pobox.com>. Andy has developed a spreadsheet that speeds sign-in, does
automatic badge-checking for pre-registrants. calculates the qualifying/seeding
order for semifinalists, including verifying whether a win is in the first heat
entered, and does most of the preparation of the event report form.

2016 HISTORY UPDATED: The official story of BPA’s 2016 has been written and
posted at http://boardgamers.org/history_centurions_2016.html
<http://boardgamers.org/history_centurions_2016.html> with the usual assortment
of Top Centurions, competition statistics, and honors won. Meanwhile, the
renovation of our website continues to make progress with the completion of all
Event Laurelists lists, histories and winners for all current events which can
be tracked from http://boardgamers.org/yearbook16/
<http://boardgamers.org/yearbook16/> by clicking on an event and following
through on the resulting page with clicks on the Event History icon. That, in
turn, will lead you to a third page with links to past years’ reports and
winners photos. Work continues on the updating of other features.

RESERVATIONS POLICY: The more stringent Reservation, Deposit and Cancellation
policy enacted for 2017 in combination with wider use of nearby condominiums
seems to be having the desired effect of keeping rooms available for a longer
period. Over 400 reservations have been taken already with an average stay of
7.5 days each. Despite that, between 42 and 90 rooms remain available in the
hotel for each night of the conference as we open reservations for shorter
stays. While making reservations for consecutive nights in the hotel will be
increasingly difficult as the convention nears, shorter stay durations should
be easier to obtain than longer ones. In any case, be sure to follow up with a
reservationist at 800-452-2223 if you are having difficulty with on-line
reservations. Over 100 condos, chalets and cabins are still available.

HOTEL RESERVATIONS OPEN: On February 15th at 9 AM EST Seven Springs will
commence taking WBC hotel reservations for stays of four days or longer - down
from the previous required stay of five days. The length of stay requirement
will be further reduced to stays of two nights or more on May 15th. Details are
provided at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbclodging_7S.html
<http://www.boardgamers.org/wbclodging_7S.html>. Please note the new
Cancellation Policy calling for forfeiture of deposits BEFORE making your
reservations.

BoD NOMINATIONS: All BPA members are hereby notified of their right to nominate
members for the three Board seats whose terms expire at the next WBC. To appear
on the ballot, a member must be nominated in writing by at least three members;
one of which must be the nominee. Nominations must be signed and received at
BPA, 1541 Redfield Rd, Bel Air, MD 21015 no later than February 28th to be
eligible for election in that year. NOTE: Email nominations are NOT acceptable,
nor can a member nominate more than one member for the Board. When
contemplating nominations, members should consider that the BPA conducts most
of its business by email and needs Board members who are able and willing to
offer their time and skills to the organization in a timely manner. Board
members should be considered more for their ability to contribute to the
running of a successful company than for their attachment to any particular
game or genre. Besides forwarding a signed nomination, each nominee should
submit by March 1st a statement not to exceed 100 words summarizing what they
can contribute in service to the Board of Directors of the BPA. The nomination
form is on line at http://www.boardgamers.org/bpanom.htm
<http://www.boardgamers.org/bpanom.htm>.

POG ROUND 2: The Sixth BPA Paths of Glory PBeM tournament began with over 100
players and the Double Elimination event recently received reinforcements for
Round 2’s scheduled 125-day Round. There were 26 AP wins vs 24 CP wins in Round
1. The median bid was 1 with the AP winning 45% of those games. The
"average" match completed on Turn 13 with eight games going the full 20 turns.
GM Tom Gregorio is backing this mega tournament with an effort proportional to
its size with a great newsletter and website support. If you are a POG player,

in the other bracket.

VICTORY IN THE PACIFIC PROGRESSES: The top and bottom seeds were eliminated in
the latest round -- with the middle seed taking a safe bye. After its edge in
the previous two rounds, the USN finally posted a perfect round by winning both
Scott Beall's drawn-out semifinal and Ted Drozd's quick quarterfinal. Michael
Day and Wayne Bonnett were the IJN victims. Joe Dragon took a bye to move into
a semifinal with Drozd. Scott Beall became the fourth player (the most ever)
to receive a bye and took his Dark Horse status into the Final! Check the
progress at http://www.gameaholics.com/vitp_bpa/vitp_bpa_single_elim_15.htm
<http://www.gameaholics.com/vitp_bpa/vitp_bpa_single_elim_15.htm>!

Remember ... all of the above PBeM fun is free to current BPA members. Others
may qualify with a $10 Email membership in the year the event starts. All
multi-day paid attendees to WBC are current BPA members for the balance of that
calendar year. You need not keep your membership current in order to finish a
PBeM event. Players may join the BPA throughout the year. See the BPA Terms
http://www.boardgamers.org/bpaterms.htm
<http://www.boardgamers.org/bpaterms.htm> page for details.

=================================

BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game
are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run
tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one
another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you
do. Get involved. See the requirements to host a BPA email tournament at
