2012 WBC EVENT PREVIEWS AVAILABLE: The individual event previews for all WBC tournaments are now posted at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbkex/ as only WBC does them. View the details of your favorite events and then plan your schedule using Steve Okonski's Personal Scheduler which will soon appear at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/sviewer/ in an improved format. You will soon be able to find additional scheduling aids by Steve at http://www.boardgamers.org/wbc/schedule.htm - for the ultimate in planning your week at WBC.
WBC 2012 PRE-REGISTRATION OPEN: The registration form for the 2012 World Boardgaming Championships is now available at http://www.boardgamers.org/downloads/WBC12prereg.pdf . Those who have already purchased Sustaining or Tribune memberships for 2012 are reminded that they do not have to do anything else to register for WBC unless they wish to order souvenirs, enter a team in the Team Tournament, or purchase pre-con admissions to add to their Sustaining level memberships. Check the May newsletter for details on other scheduling aids and the on-line version of the 2011-2012 yearbook which is coming next. We will also add a WBC status page next month where you can check your registration status and advertise for roommates, rides, and gaming opportunities at WBC.
WBC VENDORS: The WBC Vendor's Room is again a sellout, assuring attendees a wide selection of new and hard-to-find games to purchase in 2012. See the vendor links on our home page for a complete list. If the Vendor's Room is an important part of your convention experience, be sure to visit during the last three days of the conference because it does not open until Friday, August 3rd.
YEARBOOK & FREEBIES DEADLINE: The opportunity for free souvenir shirts, hats and yearbooks is just about over. Those purchasing Tribune memberships by the end of April can still qualify for the free goodies - including a cool new style souvenir shirt. After May 1st, those wanting these items need to order them separately before July 21st for delivery at WBC. Programs with the 2012 schedule will be available later, both on line and at WBC.
============================== PBeM News:GUTFREUND WINS BREAKOUT NORMANDY: Mike Kaye and Mark Gutfreund were the last of 36 players left standing in the 7th BPA PBeM tournament. Neither had won a BPA BKN tournament and the outcome was in doubt until the very end when an Allied assault on St Lo fell short on the 6th impulse of June 12th leaving Mark's Germans triumphant. Other laurelists included Tom Dworschak, Kevin Hammond, Marvin Birnbaum and Scott Fenn who finished third through sixth. More details and current laurel totals can be found at http://www.boardgamers.org/yearbook/bknpge.htm#pbem .
NEXT BREAKOUT NORMANDY PBeM: The 8th rendition of the tournament will begin May 1st and will accommodate either the original AH version or the recent L2 deluxe edition with the former serving as the default. Rounds have a 5-month time limit although the later rounds tend to play faster. Check out the details at https://sites.google.com/site/breakoutnormandytournament/ .
NICHOLSON WINS WAR AT SEA: Dennis Nicholson took his second BPA War At Sea title by adding the 8th BPA PBeM wood to his 2005 WBC plaque. Dennis went 6-0 in the double elimination format to best a field of 50. Vince Meconi fell victim to Dennis' guns twice in back-to-back losses to close the tournament. Don Greenwood finished third with a 7-2 record after running off six straight wins in the losers bracket, only to fall victim to Vince's last tun heroics in a close contest. Other laurels were awarded to Jim Laws, Robert Drozd and Darren Kilfara. Mor details and updated laurels can be found at http://boardgamers.org/yearbook/waspge.htm
PEI WINS WASHINGTON'S WAR: "Master" James Pei bested a field of 70 players to win the first BPA Washington's War PBEM Tournament, a six round swiss competition which began in May 2010. Pei ran the table, going 6-0 to add to his legendary championship total, including his recent win in the WAM X Washington's War tournament. He defeated (in order) Andre Heller, Kirk Harris, Kent Tieman, Paul Gaberson (the 2004 We the People PBEM champ), George Young (a three time WBC We the People champ) and Jay Meyers. He won as the Brits twice and as the Americans 4 times. In the unofficial championship game against the previously undefeated Meyers in Round 6 he won as the Americans despite having Washington captured mid way through the game. Other laurelists, all of whom went 5-1, were Kent Tieman, Ron Jacobsen, Phillip Burgin-Young and Marvin Birnbaum. More details and updated laurel totals can be found at http://boardgamers.org/yearbook/wwrpge.htm#pbem .
SPEED CIRCUIT: The first of three heats in our first PBeM Speed Circuit tournament is now in the books with three 12-car races complete. Turyko Suky and John Shaheen qualified out of Race A, Bert Schoose and Giuseppe Incorpora emerged from Race B, while Jeff Cornett and Tim Mossman qualified in Race C. There were seven DNFs altogether with Race B proving the toughest with three cars knocked out of the competition. MARCH MADNESS: The ninth annual BPA March Madness tournament is moving at the most deliberate pace in its history. Two teams, Bill Edward’s Wichita State 2006 and Bruce Monnin’s Washington 2005, have reached the Final Four. They await their opponents who will come from the matchups of Bob Menzel’s Miami (Ohio) 1999 vs Sean McCulloch’s Villanova 1971 and Jeff Martin’s Indiana 1953 vs Robert Rund’s Louisville 2011. The average seed of these six teams is 25.3, and seed #8A Washington 2005 is the only single digit seed remaining. Follow the details at http://www.nktelco.net/bdmonnin/mm-brack-2012.htm.
PRO GOLF PROGRESS: Is it possible to use the word "progress" and Pro Golf in the same sentence? The first round of the Third BPA Pro Golf PBeM tournament is finished. The cut line was at Even par, and the 33 duffers who finished at even par or better will move on to the second round. The lucky 11 who didn't make the cut may now return to normalcy - or whatever passes for normal for people who play Pro Golf. Mark Yoshikawa dominated the Lancaster Host course, as his John Daly completed the round at 9 under par, four strokes ahead of nearest competitor Chris Kizer (one of Lisa Gutermuth’s Duke posse). They go to Duke to learn how to play Pro Golf? The second round will be played on the Muirfield Village course used in the WBC Skins game. The combined score of the two rounds will be used to determine the top one third (rounded up – 15 players) and ties who will make the second cut and play the third round on the Arrowhead Park course. The combined score of the three rounds will be used to determine the Champion and other Laurelists. Any ties will be resolved using a 3-hole playoff on the 2002 Augusta National course. If still tied, another three holes will be played. For details, see the event webpage at: http://www.nktelco.net/bdmonnin/pro_golf_PBeM_2012.html and the current scoresheet at http://www.nktelco.net/bdmonnin/PBeM_Scoresheet.htm .
erraceAll BPA PBeM tournaments require current BPA membership when the event starts. All multi-day paid attendees to WBC are current BPA members for the balance of that calendar year. Associate Calendar year memberships enabling play in all PBeM events starting in that year cost only $10. You need not keep your membership current in order to finish a PBeM event. Players may join the BPA throughout the year. See http://www.boardgamers.org/bpaterms.htm for details.
BPA members who would like to see an email tournament for their favorite game are encouraged to step forward as the GM of such an event. BPA does not run tournaments. Rather, we are an organization of gamers lending support to one another so such events can happen. No one cares as much about your hobby as you do. Get involved. See the requirements to host a BPA email tournament at http://www.abovethefields.com/top_pbem/
